five things friday: nature walks, narrated stories, self-care

Hello there,
I can feel the pull of end of year/holiday energy creeping in. The twinkle lights
are going up, decorations are coming in, Black Friday sales codes are streaming into my inbox. We are on the brink of the Holiday Whoosh and I am hovering between anticipation and overwhelm. So what do I do? Make a list of some of my tiny thoughts and wee bits of magic for you, of course.
I hope you enjoy.
1. I needed a reset so I went walking someplace I am not familiar with. I've only been to Shollenberger Park once before, years ago, even though it is practically in my back yard. Weird. And sad. Hopefully I
will turn that around and enjoy the wonders close to me more often.
Where is someplace wonderful close to you that deserves a
visit? Magic waits there.
2. I am asking myself this question: Is my self-care truly nourishing, healing, and rejuvenating, or am I doing it so that
I can keep doing what is draining me? I have not been liking my answer, hence the nature walk and deeper devotion to my creative practice.
3. Thanksgiving
is next week here in the US so menu planing is happening. One pumpkin pie or two? Pull out Bill the Resurrected, my sourdough starter, and make bread (yes Bill is his name, he told me and then I almost killed him and he came back stronger, so he was resurrected) or do rolls from the store? Try the new cookie recipe from a friend or save for Christmas? Is this the year to make mac and cheese a new addition to the feast or go with what is tried and true? The questions, the very big
questions!
It is also a complicated holiday given this country's history but making space for the complications and nuance, harms and losses, gives the day deeper meaning. It opens my heart to deeper gratitude. The
kind that comes from the stories of those that walked before us and suffered in the making of what is here today. History is not always what we were taught or what we wished it were, but truth gives us the chance to heal and honor.
4. Whether you know him from Reading Rainbow, Star Trek: The Next Generation, or way back to Roots like I do, LaVar Burton is a treasure and so is his podcast LaVar Burton Reads. As he describes it, it is like Reading Rainbow for adults where he
narrates short stories from many genres. I just finished listening to "Chivalry" by Neil Gaiman. There benefit of coming to something later the large back library. I can start from the beginning and know I will not have to wait for a new episodes for a long time.
5.
A blessing for your week:

May patience allow allow the blossoming of anticipation for all that is meant for you.
Until next time, Sandi
