five things friday: food stories, holiday enchantment, ease

Hello there,
It is Wednesday as I write this week's things. This afternoon was pie making and
cookie baking, and my first mac and cheese. My contributions to the family Thanksgiving at my sister's tomorrow. This means we are not spending the day just to two of us with my husband doing the cooking, as is our usual tradition. However, he is unwilling to lose out on a week of leftovers so he will be making a second feast Friday, just for leftovers! That would be today as this hits your inbox.
So from my cozied up corner of the world having pumpkin pie for breakfast and Black Friday tumbles us into full holiday mode, here are some things. From just before the big Whoosh of it all.
1. What foods do you go to this time of year? What are your family favorites? There are the ones that the colder weather calls forth and then there are the ones that feel like home. We can get pretty wound up in which foods are good and which are bad, which are healthy and which are not, but what if there were no good or
bad foods, just foods with a story to tell? What story did your last meal have for you? What story do your holiday favorites have to tell?
2. Pancakes and
French toast (or egg toast as my grandpa called it) will always and forever remind me of my grandma. The image of her flipping pancakes with her hand on her hip, reflected in the mirrored wall I looked into as I waited for breakfast, is so simple, but so nourishing. My grandmother was not a warm fuzzy woman, frugal in her ways, but there was never a restriction on how many pancakes we could have. We just needed to finish what we asked for and means all the syrup too. I make pancakes when I want
to connect to the people I come from, the ones who are no longer here.
3. It is ok to make things as easy as possible this season. Including saying no to
the pressure to buy all the things, give more energy than you have, sacrifice yourself in trying to please everyone. It is ok to take break, do what you need to connect rejuvenate yourself. In case you need a reminder. I know I do. Often.
4. I am looking forward to holiday lights. Hands down one of my favorite parts of this time of year. It makes it so much easier to believe in an enchanted world with twinkly lights everywhere. There is joy in the enchantment and magical moments.
5.
A blessing for your
week:
